Proof of Purchase
What proof of purchase is, how to keep or recover it, and the documentation that returns, warranties, and resale platforms expect — with brand-by-brand guides below.
How to keep and recover proof of purchase
Four steps for returns, warranty, and resale documentation.
Keep the original receipt and order confirmation
The dated, itemized receipt is the core proof of purchase. For online orders, the confirmation email and account order history serve the same role.
Save the card and authenticity documents
For luxury and resale, keep the authenticity card, serial or model number, dust bag, and any brand certificate alongside the receipt — buyers and platforms check these.
Recover it from the retailer if it's missing
Brand and store accounts, loyalty programs, and in-store lookups can often re-issue a record of the original purchase using your card and the date.
Organize a clean record for resale or returns
Once you've verified the original details, keep a clean, consistent copy so a return, warranty claim, or resale listing has the documentation it needs.

What counts as proof of purchase?
Usually the original itemized receipt, an order confirmation, or an invoice that shows the merchant, date, item, and amount paid. For luxury goods, the authenticity card, serial number, and brand documentation strengthen it further.
Why does proof of purchase matter for resale?
On resale platforms, documentation raises buyer confidence and value, supports authentication, and helps with returns or disputes. Sneaker and luxury buyers in particular look for the original receipt and brand papers.
Can I get proof of purchase if I lost the receipt?
Often yes. Retailer accounts, loyalty programs, and in-store lookups can re-issue a purchase record. Start with the brand's order history or customer service using the card you paid with and the date.
Does a credit card statement count as proof of purchase?
It confirms the amount and date but usually isn't enough on its own, because it doesn't itemize what was bought. Pair it with the order detail or an itemized receipt for returns, warranty, or resale.
