What Is on a Real GST Tax Invoice?
Rule 46 of the CGST Rules prescribes exactly what an Indian tax invoice must contain, so GST invoices look remarkably consistent from a street-corner trader to a listed company. These are the fields that make an invoice GST-compliant.
Supplier GSTIN in the 15-character format
Every GSTIN follows a fixed structure: a 2-digit state code, the supplier's 10-character PAN, an entity code, the letter Z, and a check character. The first two digits must match the supplier's state - a mismatch between the GSTIN state code and the supplier address is an immediate red flag.
Consecutive invoice number, max 16 characters
Rule 46 requires a consecutive serial number unique for the financial year, up to 16 characters, containing only letters, numerals, and the hyphen or slash. Most businesses reset the series each April with the financial year, e.g. INV/2025-26/0147.
HSN or SAC code on every line
Goods carry HSN codes and services carry SAC codes, with the digit requirement tied to turnover: businesses up to ₹5 crore must show at least 4-digit HSN on B2B invoices, and those above ₹5 crore must show 6 digits. Each line also states quantity, unit, and taxable value before tax.
Place of supply and the CGST/SGST vs IGST split
The place of supply determines the tax split: intra-state supplies charge CGST plus SGST in equal halves, while inter-state supplies charge a single IGST line at the full rate. Showing both splits on one invoice, or the wrong split for the states involved, is a common giveaway of a fabricated document.
E-invoice IRN and QR code for larger suppliers
Businesses with aggregate turnover above ₹5 crore must register B2B invoices on the Invoice Registration Portal, which returns a unique 64-character Invoice Reference Number (IRN) and a signed QR code that must be printed on the invoice. Without the IRN, the invoice is not valid under GST for these suppliers, and from April 2025 businesses at ₹10 crore or more must report invoices to the portal within 30 days.
Total in words, reverse charge note, and signatory
The invoice closes with the amount in figures and in words, a note stating whether tax is payable on reverse charge, and the signature or digital signature of the supplier or authorised signatory. Recipient details matter too: a registered buyer's GSTIN must appear for input tax credit, and for unregistered buyers, invoices of ₹50,000 or more must state the recipient's name, address, and place of supply.
Get Your Original GST Invoice First
A GST invoice can only come from the supplier, so request a duplicate from their billing or accounts team - suppliers issue goods invoices in triplicate and retain a copy, and most accounting software can re-issue a PDF instantly. If your business is registered, cross-check the invoice in your GSTR-2B on the GST portal, and verify any e-invoice by scanning its QR code. Use this template when the original is unavailable - a supplier who has shut down, a purged mailbox, or an internal record you need to rebuild for bookkeeping.

GST Invoice FAQ
Common questions about creating a GST-compliant tax invoice in India.
Open the GST invoice generator, edit the supplier details and GSTIN, invoice number and date, place of supply, bill-to details, HSN/SAC line items, tax rates, and totals, then preview and download as a PDF.
Yes. Each line item can include its HSN (goods) or SAC (services) code in the description, as required on a GST tax invoice.
Yes — use CGST+SGST lines for intra-state supplies and IGST for inter-state, with the place of supply field.
GST invoices are issued by the supplier, so ask the supplier's billing or accounts team for a duplicate copy - suppliers must retain their invoice records, and goods invoices are issued in triplicate with a copy retained by the supplier. If your business is GST-registered, you can also confirm the invoice details in your GSTR-2B on the GST portal once the supplier files GSTR-1, and e-invoices can be verified by scanning the printed QR code.
Input tax credit requires a valid tax invoice issued by a GST-registered supplier showing your business GSTIN, and the supplier must report that invoice in GSTR-1 so it appears in your GSTR-2B - credit is matched against the portal, not just the paper. A self-created document can never support an ITC claim; only the supplier's own invoice can.
Yes. The tax breakdown section supports CGST + SGST for intra-state supply (same state) or IGST for inter-state supply. Edit the rates and amounts to match your transaction.
The layout follows the standard Indian GST tax invoice structure — supplier and buyer GSTIN, HSN/SAC codes, CGST/SGST/IGST breakup, and amount in words. For statutory invoicing, ensure the details you enter are accurate and sequentially numbered per GST rules.
Yes — freelancers and small businesses use it for service invoices with SAC codes and GST, exported as a clean PDF for clients and accounting records.
A real GST tax invoice shows the supplier's name, address, and 15-character GSTIN; a consecutive invoice number and date; the recipient's details with GSTIN if registered; the place of supply; each line item with its HSN or SAC code, quantity, and taxable value; the CGST/SGST or IGST rates and amounts; the total in figures and in words; a reverse-charge note where applicable; and the authorised signatory. E-invoices add an IRN and QR code printed on the document.
